Interest Groups

Interest Groups - General Information

Interest Groups provide an opportunity for members to meet regularly to chat, exchange ideas, and explore shared interests. The current groups listed below are always glad to welcome new members. For more information about a group (including when and where the next meeting is!), call the contact person listed in The Branch newsletter.

Armchair Travelers
Armchair Travlers is the group for people who love to travel, either personally or vicariously.  We meet the third Thursday of each month at 7PM, except December, to share someone's adventures at home or abroad.  We are always looking for people to share their travel pictures with the group even if they are not a regular attendee.  Thanks to modern technology all sorts of media are usable--slides, digital files, film prints, DVDs, CDs and videos.  Let us know if you have some travel pictures you would like to share or just come and see where other AAUW members have been.

Birding 101
This group provides a good opportunity for beginning and experienced birders to see local brids and socialize which compiling their list.  We will also talk about and try to identify flowers, trees, butterflies and any other interesting wildlife that we encounter on our walks.  Meetings are monthly---always on a Saturday.

Great Decisions 2009

Interested in world events?  This may be the group for you.  We've had six successful years of the Great Decisions program.  This is a study/discussion program from the Foreign Policy Association of New York, an independent, nonpartisan organization that has worked since 1918 to educate the public about foreign policy issues.

Look for a flier in December with more details.  Mark your 2009 calendar as the program will be on eight Sundays, early evening, late January through March.

FOOD

Eat Well, Live Well

Struggling to stay at your goal or maintain your chosen ideal weight?  Just wish to learn to eat in a sane and healthy way? Need a supportive, thoughtful where you can share successful ideas? Come gather with the Eat Well, Live Well group on the second Monday of each month.  We try a variey of places to eat, and look for presenters with healthy eating ideas to share. We are not the "food police;" we work toward healthy minds and bodies.

Gourmet

Gourmet is for those who love good company and good food.  We meet for an evening potluck, usually the third Saturday of every other (odd) month. This is in the home of a member and has a theme or favorite foreign cuisine. The even months are reserved for Member’s Nite Out and we go to an area restaurant on the second Tuesday. Come join us.

Ladies in the Kitchen

Do you like food? Eating it, talking about it and cooking it? Join us to: 1) learn about foods and ingredients; 2) test drive a favorite recipe; 3) discuss local foods, restaurants, books and more, and 4) share a family dinner table tradition.  We do not have a set meeting night.  It depends on what works that month for the speaker and the members.

Lunch Bunch

On the third Friday of each month, this group meets at a different North Coast restaurant for a delicious lunch and some relaxed socializing.  All members are welcome.  This is a great way to make new friends and keep up with the old.

Too Tired to Cook Supper Club
This interest group dines out on the second Friday of each month at 6:00 PM. The newsletter calendar will list the choice of restaurant location and a phone number for reservations each month. Good conversation, a respite from cooking at the end of the work week, and the opportunity to make new friendships are the goals. Both couples and singles are welcome.

Mah Jongg

Mah  Jongg continues. Come join the fun.  We have varying degrees of knowledge about the game rules, so we're all learning together, and beginners or just-want-to see-what it's about explorers" are welcome.  Mah Jongg (where did that spelling come from?) is similar to card games, even shades of gin rummy, but you play with colorful tiles or blocks.  We like to meet where we can have several tables at play, thus accommodating various ability/skill levels.  We schedule gatherings at different times in order to accommodate week day or weekend availability.

Reel People

This movie discussion group meets from September to June the first Friday of the month at 10:00 AM. We select a film or films we wish to see in the coming month. Prior to the next meeting, each member views the movie(s) at her convenience rather than a scheduled time. Our discussions also include videos and other movies we have enjoyed. Sometimes members attend a recommended film after the meeting. Occasionally we gather in the evening, such as when we have our Academy Awards Party. If you enjoy movies please join us.

Scrabble

This group gets together at noon on the fourth Thursday of each month (except for November and December, when it is the second Thursday for a relaxed, friendly game or two of Scrabble and an occasional sampling of other word games. New members are very welcome.

Stitch-in-Time
This stitchery group meets on the second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m.  Members bring whatever stitching project they want to work on: quilting, embroidery, etc.  We meet at different member homes.

 Writers Workshop
This group comprises both those who already consider themselves writers and those who would like to try their hand at writing.  No genre restrictions.  The group provides a first audience for writing in a warm, supportive atmosphere.  For writers looking for a more vigorous response, the group offers accountability for regular production and a more critical response for those who explicitly request it.  Depending on the needs of the group, meetings will be monthly (or semi-monthly) for two hours at members' homes on a rotating basis.
